Last Entry [Mar. 28th, 2009|02:13 pm]
Hello everyone,

From now on, you may get in touch with me through the 27+20 multiply site, http://weare2720.multiply.com or through duster's http://dusterlab.multiply.com. i shall be putting all  my "social" networking accounts offline. I felt that I haven't been living much and just glued to my computer all day. i got off alcohol in 2006, got off perezhilton in 2008 and before i turn 26 in a few months' time, i've decided to get off facebook, multiply and plurk. it'll be nice to get back to the basics - just a notebook to journal to chronicle my life and to see and talk to friends more face to face.

last week i should've done a million things but i've surrendered to the world of teh internets, of downloading movies and observing other people's lives unfold except for mine. i've become a sad little internet monkey, and it's time i've taken control of my life.

last night i was going through flickr images of quiapo, divisoria and kamuning. i love these places but i can't help but think that i've spent more time exploring new york than exploring these places. i've become lazy to explore my own city and grown fearful of creating my own stories and experiences. i would love to silkscreen and learn carpentry and be my own electrician, and build a(n?) herb garden, cook, sew, housekeep, make more art and music. but i can't do it sitting in front of my computer 90% of the time.

so i say goodbye to my online life, expect to see more of me my good friends!

love,
katwo

NU 107 Rock Awards [Dec. 9th, 2008|04:07 am]
Again we would like to thank NU 107 for having us design and animate the nominees this year. NU came to us and gave us their concept of a rock boss. Before NU spoke to us we were doing a "Batman the Animated Series" marathon. It so happen that because of that we took inspiration from it and took a spin on it for the theme Rock Boss. Much like last year there were 14 categories and 5-6 nominees per category we illustrated the bands and made a very dark mood for the design. Black, Red, and white were the main colors. We wanted to get that dark night/1940's feel with an updated twist.

here are some sample screen shots and video:

The best, worst and okay of TV this season, again, IMHO [Nov. 24th, 2008|09:12 pm]
1. Heroes sucks. This show has just turned sour after a disappointing 2nd season run. I stopped watching it a month ago realizing that the time and bandwidth I use to download the show is wasted. I have no idea how they'll turn things around this late in the game. The lucky ones are the characters killed in the 1st season - it'll be easier for them to resurrect their acting careers.

2. Fringe is the best new TV show this season. JJ Abrams came up with some new X-File-inspired show that will resurrect Joshua Jackson's career and soon turn Anna Torv into a household name. Wikipedia describes the show as "The show is described as a cross between The X-FilesAltered StatesThe Twilight Zone and Dark Angel" Sometimes the show comes up formulaic but it remains entertaining, engrossing and I can't help myself from looking forward for new episodes every week. One thing though, one might not want to watch the show 2 or 3 in a row, the formula and pattern of the show will become tedious. Props to the opening sequence.

3. Dexter remains consistent with its 3rd season, and I must say this season is just as exciting as the two previous ones.

4. The best TV show this season is NCIS. Last week's episode was just incredibly good, and there's something about Mark Harmon's character that I've started to cherish and think that Gibbs is an actual person with an intriguing neurosis. I have no idea where they'll be taking the rest of the episodes this season because I know that it won't disappoint me. The characters in this show are so well developed that producers can play up the storytelling of each episode that things remain fresh, fun and light - not bad for something that deals with dead marines all the time. A welcomed break from the world of CSI and other police-related drama. I can't wait to see the next episode.

5. 30 Rock is starting to rely just a little too much on big-name guest appearances this season and I have no idea why they do it. I think it diverts from the real essence of the show - its central characters are already very entertaining and funny. I don't know if they feel that big named celebrities will actually pull up ratings, but the show has become less addictive. In fact Jennifer Aniston's guesting actually made the lowest TV rating for the show. I hope Tina Fey is not spiraling down from Mean Girls to Baby Mama (yeah, what a waste of time and bandwidth that was).

6. Dirty Sexy Money is gearing up for something not as intriguing anymore. The reason I loved this show in its first season was that it had a way of combining soap opera antics, drama and a penchant-for-the-lifestyles-of-the-rich-and-famous intrigue and turning into something entertaining. I just don't know where they'll be taking the show this season. Money buys everything but the show is not just orchestrating the same appeal with its characters and its plot. I don't know where they're taking the subplot with Nick's dad but I think it's about time that they get into it - just like NCIS is finishing something with last season's subplot and taking the subplot into this whole new level in the current season. But I do have hope for the show, and I'll still finish the season.

7. The Starter Wife - I saw the first season, it was unremarkable yet entertaining, so it comes as a total surprise that they actually renewed the show for a 2nd season. Just to get on some post-SATC cravings, this show is recommended for that. Hollywood, intrigue, drama, comedy and a good dose of fashion is just too good to resist. The TV show was actually based on the book of the same title, and I felt that the 1st season couldn't take the show further from what it was based on. But I'm glad the network renewed it for a 2nd season because Debra Messing is just wonderful, and surprisingly not annoying, on this show. I don't really have a thing for them rehashing classic movie spots  but sometimes it gets funny. The story is progressing well, characters are lovably flawed and it's just really entertaining.

On Robert Rauschenberg and THAT moment of clarity [Nov. 9th, 2008|07:29 am]
When I was 17, I was enrolled in a course that had a reputation for having the most undecided students in the campus and I remember taking refuge in the small collection of Art books in the Ateneo library. There would be one or two other people browsing the books, but I'd stay there between classes browsing through art - a desire that stemmed out of frustration of not being able to take up Fine Arts in UP. By that time I was quite familiar with Andy Warhol's work so I'd go through the 1960's collections and I remember stumbling upon "Rebus" by Robert Rauschenberg and there was something so spectacular about the chaos, the mismatched mediums, the posters and the dripping red paint that hypnotized me.

At that moment I wanted to do THAT, to create that feeling of true wonder and visual connection without hesitation, without explanations and words. And so I started painting, giving my earliest art works to teachers who have made a big impression on me and to my closest friends who inspire me to strive. I also got into music - something to physically express that joy in just being to create at a very specific moment.

Eight years onwards, I found myself at the Museum of Modern Art, right in front of a sign that said:

What stopped me from crying was the presence of dozens of tourists looking around. I found myself looking at his work, just inches away from me. I was astounded. I knew that if it wasn't for the books I've seen in Ateneo 8 years ago, I wouldn't be in New York City on that beautiful September day, standing in MOMA at that very moment. Every decision I've made since first seeing Rauschenberg's work was a choice guided by that beautiful moment when I've somehow connected with his works - without having the capacity to intellectualize or tangibly define how I understood it. Sabi nga ng kanta "It's more than a feeling."

I still can't explain it, but seeing his works revived something in me. It warmed up my passion once again and defined where I am and where I should be going - not as clear as a map with all the directions provided, but with a homing system only the heart can discern.
